Made in Canada: Classroom Furniture Built in Moorefield, Ontario
Fern Kids furniture is made at 76 McGivern Street in Moorefield, Ontario. Not designed here and built elsewhere — cut, assembled, finished and shipped from the same building, by the people who drew it. We have worked this way since 2020.
What “Canadian-made” means here
Plenty of catalogues say made in Canada. It is worth knowing what is actually being claimed, because the word covers everything from a factory to a warehouse that re-boxes imported goods.
Fern Kids is vertically integrated. We run our own CNC and our own finishing. A shelf you order is milled from sheet stock in our shop, sanded and finished in our booth, and loaded onto a truck from our dock. There is no overseas catalogue behind our product line, and no third-party factory whose schedule we are waiting on.
Why that matters when you are furnishing a room
- Dimensions can change. If a wall is 94 inches and the shelf is 96, we can cut the shelf. That is a conversation, not a special order from another continent.
- We quote the whole room. Most of our work is a complete classroom or centre rather than a single item, and our complimentary layout service maps the space before you order.
- Lead times are ours to give. We schedule against our own shop floor, so when we tell you a date it is a date we control — not a container ship and a customs queue.
- Parts still exist in five years. The same shop that built the piece can cut a replacement panel for it. Discontinued does not mean gone.
- There is someone to call. Moorefield is a real address with a real phone number, in your time zone.
What it is made from
Most of our range is Baltic birch plywood. We use it because the core is void-free, which is what lets a joint hold a fastener after five years of a four-year-old hanging off it — the failure mode that ends most children’s furniture is a stripped screw in a hollow core, not a broken panel.
Everything is finished with low-VOC, child-safe finishes that stand up to the disinfectants a licensed room already uses. Edges and corners are rounded and sanded. Where solid hardwood performs better than ply — outdoor pieces, high-wear edges — we use solid hardwood instead.

Custom work
When a project needs something that is not in the catalogue — a loft, a reading structure, a full millwork package — it goes through Fern Studio, our design-and-build arm. Same shop, same people. We have built children’s spaces for libraries, childcare centres, schools, condominium developments and cafés across Canada and into the United States.
Warranty
Fern Kids furniture carries a limited lifetime warranty on materials and craftsmanship. The full terms are on our Terms and Conditions page.
