Preschool Furniture
A preschool room has to do more work than any other room in a centre. The children are old enough to choose where they go and what they do, and young enough that the furniture decides whether they can do it without an adult. Get the heights and the sightlines right and the room runs itself. Get them wrong and staff spend the day lifting, fetching and redirecting.
Everything below is built in our own shop at 76 McGivern St in Moorefield, Ontario — our CNC, our crew, Baltic birch and solid hardwood. It ships preassembled and it carries a limited lifetime warranty on materials and craftsmanship.
Start with the zones, not the product list
Directors who furnish well think in zones first and products second. A preschool room usually needs six of them, and each one has a different job.
Arrival and self-storage
The first thing a child does every morning is put something away. Daycare cubbies and coat lockers at the right height are what make that a one-person job instead of a two-person one. Section count matters more than footprint — count your licensed capacity, not your wall length.
Tables and seating
This is where most of the day happens. Classroom tables want to be grouped, not lined up, and preschool chairs need to match the table height properly — a chair that is two inches off turns into a posture problem by eleven in the morning. If you are buying both at once, buy them together.
Storage and the prepared environment
Open classroom shelving is what lets children select and return materials on their own. The principle is the same one Montessori rooms are built on, and it works in any pedagogy: if a child can see it and reach it, they will use it and put it back. We go into this in more depth in our guide on setting up a Montessori shelf.
Dramatic play
Play kitchens and dramatic play units are the hardest-used furniture in a preschool room. Modular units in two heights let the same pieces serve a toddler room and a preschool room as your enrolment shifts.
Sensory and messy work
Sand and water tables and arts and crafts furniture need two things most catalogues forget: a lid, so the table is usable when the activity is finished, and a surface that survives being wiped down several times a day.
Gross motor and quiet
Preschoolers need somewhere to climb and somewhere to disappear, often within a few feet of each other. Play lofts do both — active on top, enclosed underneath — which is why they earn their footprint in rooms that do not have space to spare.
What licensing actually requires
No province asks for a third-party product certification on classroom furniture. What they do regulate is space, and the way they calculate it has a direct bearing on what you buy. In Ontario, licensed capacity is based on unobstructed floor area — built-in millwork counts against you, furniture on casters does not. We wrote up what each province requires in daycare furniture and licensing requirements in Canada. Confirm anything that affects your licence with your own licensing officer.
Buying from a manufacturer rather than a catalogue
Most of what is sold as preschool furniture in Canada is imported and resold. That is not automatically worse, but it changes three things you will care about later: whether a dimension can be changed to suit your room, whether a replacement part still exists in five years, and who pays the freight when something arrives wrong.
We build ours, so the answers are different. If you are comparing suppliers, how to tell who actually makes it sets out the questions worth asking anyone — us included. More on how and where we build is on Made in Canada, and the material detail is on Materials & Safety.
Plan the room before you buy the furniture
The most expensive mistake in this category is ordering a room's worth of furniture against a floor plan that was never tested. Our layout service puts a drawn plan in front of you first — zones, circulation, sightlines, and what actually fits — so the order reflects a room that works.
