Commercial Sand & Water Tables: A Buying Guide
Fern Kids builds eight commercial sand and water tables for licensed childcare centres, preschools and schools, in square and rectangular formats, sized by age group, from $870 to $1,290. They are made from Baltic birch plywood at our own shop in Moorefield, Ontario, and they ship preassembled with a limited lifetime warranty.
This page is here to help you pick the right one. If you would rather we just did it, send us the room and we will put it in a layout.
Start with height, not with the table
The single thing that decides whether a sensory table gets used is whether children can reach into it standing flat on their feet. Too tall and they lean in on their ribs, which they will not do for long. Too short and the educators stop refilling it.
So size by the age group of the room rather than by the footprint you have free. We build each shape in three heights.

Square or rectangular?
A square table puts four children on four sides with nobody at the back of a queue, and it drops into a corner or the middle of a room without dictating traffic. It is the better choice in a smaller room and for younger children, who tend to work alone alongside each other rather than together.
A rectangular table takes more children at once and suits collaborative pouring and channelling work, where preschoolers move material from one end to the other. It also sits more naturally against a wall or a window.
Why the lid matters more than it sounds
Most of our age-specific tables come with a lid. A lid is not a nicety in a licensed room — it is what lets the table hold sand overnight without becoming a litter box or an evaporation problem, and it turns the table into an extra work surface when the sensory activity is finished. If you are choosing between two tables and one has a lid, take the lid.
Wood, not plastic
We build these from Baltic birch plywood because the core is void-free, which is what lets a joint keep holding a fastener after years of children leaning on the rim. The failure that ends most sensory tables is a stripped screw in a hollow core, not a cracked basin. Finishes are low-VOC and stand up to the disinfectants a licensed room already uses.
Buying for a whole room
Most of our work is a complete room rather than a single item. If you are furnishing a centre, send us the room type, the age group and the approximate size and we will return a layout and a quote covering the sensory table along with everything else in the room. Lead time is three to six weeks and everything ships preassembled — see Warranty, Assembly & Shipping.
